When a boiler at Ford Rouge Assembly Plant ignited, causing an explosion and fire that swept through five floors, killing and injuring workers, Gallagher-Kaiser Corporation was called upon to help in the restoration effort. The G-K team arrived at the site and began work even as coal, ash and smoke filled the air, making it impossible to see more than several feet.
With safety a primary concern, G-K employees worked around exposed metal girders, broken windows and a floor covered with twisted metal doors, debris and ash. All work was conducted according to recognized procedures and protocols designed to preserve evidence for proper evaluation.

As devastating as the human casualties and injuries were, Ford also faced the prospect of idling the majority of its workers. As many as 16 of its 20 North American assembly plants would have to be shut down if the plant was out of commission for more than a week. Thanks to G-K and other companies that dropped everything to assist in the renovation effort, the repairs that should have taken weeks were completed in record time. Within one week the complex was up and running.
